One of the things we felt was missing from most computerized baseball games
(Except for the ones that require joysticks), is the lack of participation
required by the users. Every once in awhile, you might be asked to make a
decision.
In Baseball Fanatic, all participants will have to make a decision on each
pitch, as well as other decisions as the game goes along. We also decided
not to ask you to memorize a bunch of different key combinations, except for
the up arrow key which will redisplay the score and batter statistics, and
the ESC key which allows you to exit the game before it is finished.
All other options available to you in the game can be chosen from a numeric
menu which appears in the scoreboard area.
While your team is in the field, you will be asked to make all the pitching
decisions. Specifically - what type of pitch to throw, as well as what zone
to aim for. At the same time, the batter will be trying to outguess you.
I.E., You'll pick a pitch and a zone and the batter will pick a pitch and
a zone, just like in the real game. The closer his guess comes to being
right the better his chance for a hit. Vice Versa, if you can continually
fool him then you will probably strike him out. (Providing you get the ball
over the plate.)
As a pitcher, there will also be times that you'll want to pitch out, to
prevent a runner from stealing a base.
Perhaps at other times you'll want to intentionally walk a hitter, all these
options are available to you in the course of the game.
While at bat, it will help you to be familar with your players. Some of them
are better base runners than others, some of them hit for power and some
are better hitters than others.
All the player's offensive stats have been built into the game, but not to
the point of being predictable. Yes, it's even possible for Lou Brock to
get thrown out stealing 2nd. Not likely, but possible.
We've tried to leave an element of chance to the game (just as there is in
the real game). In so doing, players may not always perform up to (or down
to) your expectations. It also gives the novice a chance to beat the
expert.
This demonstration version is the same as our regular game, except that you
will be limited to playing only 2 innings per game.
Another feature which we have incorporated into Baseball Fanatic is the
ability for you to choose the level of game.
What type of game do you like to see when you go to the ball park, or watch
on TV. I'm a slugfest man myself even though most of my friends like to
see a pitching duel.
We've incorporated 4 levels for you to choose from, each one will require
you to adjust your strategy, or if you like to be surprised, you can
choose Pot Luck and the computer will randomly pick your level of play.
Each level can flucuate considerably, so don't always expect to see a 1-0
game when you choose Pitcher's Duel or a 10-9 game when you choose Slugfest.
One last thing, and that's concerning the use of a designated hitter. You
may use one if you choose. Who you put in the pitcher's slot has no bearing
on the game other than hitting. Afterall, you are the pitcher because you
call the shots. Loading the computer down with a lineup of pitchers won't
help you any, because the computer checks for this and ignores everything
but the #9 slot, so be fair in setting the line ups.
